Day 73

Good night--deemphasized Suzuki a little--still hit everything throughout the day, and did more work with Sautille, as well as started Wohlfahrt 4 officially--looking forward to that--it's melodic and I like the challenge of the mixed phrasing.

George Phillips over at v.com turned me on to Janine Jenson playing Bartok's Romanian Dances--what an excellent treat! I fell in love with her about a year and a half ago, and this is the first chance I've had to actually hear and see her in action. She plays with energy and power (and beauty), without being over-dramatic, yet not starchy either. Watching her expressivness reminded me of my shyness.

Day 72

Good night--everything accomplished.

Sunday, January 28, 2007

Day 71

Good evening--late start but rested and focused. Need to get in touch with Amelia.

Saturday, January 27, 2007

Day 70

Better than last night--more energy--more focus--everything accomplished. Adding more legato and double stop exercise.

Friday, January 26, 2007

Day 69

Split sessions so I can enjoy tongight more.... Mandatories done.

Thursday, January 25, 2007

Day 68

Pretty good night--paced myself better... Got everything done, and did better with legato string crossings.

Wednesday, January 24, 2007

Day 67

Pretty good night--Everything accomplished--not stellar, but adequate.

Day 66

Discovered the power of raised scroll last night--signficantly--as an afterthought.

Tuesday, January 23, 2007

Day 65

Good day.. Split sessions--much pleasure this evening. Keep that scroll up!. Added more legato exercises and trills.

Monday, January 22, 2007

Day 64

Everything accomplished. Pretty good night... No fireworks, but good.

Sunday, January 21, 2007

Day 63

Firmed up lesson at 1 on the 28th. Split practice in two sessions. Changed chinrest to non-center original. Good night. Everything done.... A little burnout, but I'll work on that.

Saturday, January 20, 2007

Day 62

Sarabande bvw 997-3--very very nice. Have first sketch of 1st theme sounding good. (1 minute). The second is about a minute, both with double codas. Everything accomplished. Started 2nd theme--still have a kink in 1st one in the a-flat area.

Friday, January 19, 2007

Day 61

Good night--adequate but not really too inspired. Worked on the Sarabande beyond my program right much--it's tough but very very pretty. Finished working out the fingering on the double stop song I'm working on. I need to ask about shifting and double stops in the context of if the double stops aren't adjacent in like a scale--should they still alternate on 3rds (2/4--1/3); or, could it be like 1/3--1/3 on a down shift.

It would be a good exercise to invoke alternating fingers, but I still need to know in general.

Thursday, January 18, 2007

Day 60

I 'truly' overdid it last night--it's Laurie Niles fault ;)... So, tongight, I'm just doing the basics + Suzuki--ok everything.

Observes: slow down bowing on both pp and mf.... While the newfound relaxed yet in touch elbow is nice and the long bowings are too, it's not a ski ramp.

Day 59

please contact Marcia Graves, Coordinator for the Montclaire String Quartet School Program, at (304) 561-3518.

Day 58

Continued with double stops, and vibrato extracted for focus--seems to work well. I got a late start--sleep's messed up--but had an excellent workout. I 'must' start slowing down my vibrato approaches--I've come too far learing the relationship between securing the instrument (chin) and fluidity. I do not have any more time, so I'm making my self accountable to if it doesn't come easy, slow it down until it does--because it always does.

Still waiting to hear from Am.

Tuesday, January 16, 2007

Day 57

Moved 3rds to completely extraneous session, and played some simple music in mixed 3rds and sixths.

Formal Practice:Lots of Wohlfahrt. I need to get back into the bowing patterns more. I'm noticing that the chin rest and securing the instrument is something I need to focus on more. Alot of my challenges have been because of a lack of coordination, and trying to do an Oistrakh imitation of fluidity. Well, at this point, I'm not Oistrakh, and certainly not fluid. The point is that I'm re-discovering basic posture, and the role of the chin and shoulder rest. OTOH, it is good that I lingered with a simple left hand support viewpoint for so long. I 'believe' that down the road, I'll find a nice balance for having done so.

I did all my elements and everything else of couse. Experimented with my timer to make my slices more effective. I cut down from 3:30, to 1:10 and take a short breather between. This helps with more challenging things (re: thirds)...

Other than practicing too long, a good and solid night.

Day 56

Started this morning, applying pencil under string release for bowhair tension, reinforced by Sue Belcher. Also copied Buri's notes on the click exercise for bow pressure into my elements; and, started trying to work with it. Played a little early pre-practice--way pre.

Had a good formal session, contacted Amelia, spent some time starting more seriously playing songs in mixed 3rds and 6ths. My bow is straightening. Everything plus, accomplished. Started spreading 3rds out besides a little warm up focus as an element--seems to be better.

Sunday, January 14, 2007

Day 55

Good night... Been experimenting with hair tension--lessened it a little. Boccherini coming along ok. Everything else accomplsihed as well. Elements, other Suzuki, got back into Bach minuet though it's out of sequence, played around with Humoresque for fun.

Saturday, January 13, 2007

Day 54

Pretty good night- Heavy on the Boccherini--skipped a couple elements, or just skimmed them.. A little frazzled but effective. Brought in some of the other elments more formally (see close previous entries: finger dropping etc..).

Friday, January 12, 2007

Day 53

Had a good night. Everything accomplished. A little extra Wohlfahrt. Took notes on violinmasterclass vids earlier, and started working formally--or more so, on finger dropping, shifting, reviewing what I was learning on spiccato (with help from Buri), much of this in preparation for more serious legato.

Also, I downloaded Calvin Sieb's vids, and they seem good.

Several of the above have always been in the mix, but I was either lazy or just didn't really know how to get more serious about them--so, I've more just started finding my way. Seems to be going ok.

Also, I've been focusing on more stable posture in relation to what Amelia showed me. This means not shifting around so much; and, being aware of where I'm at when I'm playing foot-wise. Seems to be an improvement on it's own.. Cool.

I've been working on 3rd by just playing things like Ebb Tide for the time being, to get comfortable with getting above 3rd for about 4 notes with finger on crook of body. (see vmc: shifting).

Day 52

Changed things around a little--played and watched classes.

Wednesday, January 10, 2007

Day 51

Continued exploring mutes, wrist, and so on. Learned patience--had to reboot in the middle of practice--sucked!. Anyway, all accomplished. Being patient with Boccherini, and LOVING it soooo much. Started playing a little more with Wohlfahrt op45 no 4. I'm looking forward to that--it's alot more melodic.

I need to get my finger dropping exercises going somehow...

Day 50

Had a good night. Experimented successfully with homemade mutes. Wrist coming along ok. All accomplished.

Day 49

Pretty good night--been working on my bow wrist remaining fluid. Everything accomplished.

Day 48 Checkup Day.

Had a good day. Spent about an hour in the afternoon on Bocherini. I finished what I'll consider the first half-way mature passes of my 1st major goal today: Boccherini. And tonight, when I got into my formal program, I played it pretty nicely even. I've been after this point for two years now, and other than being over excited and sloppy for the first year plus, found Boccherini decidedly fairly easy. Uh, I don't feel like jumping over to my main blog so I'll get philosohical here for a minute.

I was thrilled that I worked right through Boccerhini--literally. Either this is an excellent example of the power of passion, or the piece is that easy. I think it's partly both--I can feel it as I blog. I also jammed right through the little theme from Bach's minuet (anna) that I hadn't learned and even had it sounding nicely--with pretty good bowing. That too was an awesome pleasure--this theme I've wanted to learn for literally years on piano ;)....

My general playing is improving somehow--abstractly. I'm sure it's my new improved attention to flat hair; and, I'm learning to use bow speed a little more sophisticated. Things like slowing down the bow for soft lingering vibrato, and experimenting with the bow in 3rd/5th position in terms of speed an pressure.

Crossing strings is becoming easier and more fluid. I'm 'starting' finally, to be able to implement the elbow's roll a little better in string crossings--bubble gum--and I think the colle, martelle, staccato, and bow change element exercises are also helping with depth.

Element-wise. I'm doing pretty good. I need to regroup and tighten up on several things but my discipline has been notable. And I feel the elements are helping. As blogged already, I recently added Spicatto, and have been bringin Staccato online 'a little'. I've begun really hitting Wohlfahrt pretty hard, and I think it's showing in detache. I also alternate regions.

My colle is sneaking little improvements in there, and my martele depends on my focus--I run scales etc. I've also been hitting bow changes routinely, and I feel a good breakthrough in instinctiveness developing. All of these I have questions about, but try and take them as far as I can.

Concering bow changes for example, what if one is using half or quarter bows? Is there a graduation of pinky pressure at frog/and f1 release at tip dynamics that graduate towards shorter bows? And my confidence on spiccato leaves alot to be desired. On my double stops I'm still having good and bad days, but they are coming along.

So, I have another good year of just very basic work to keep me plenty busy. For instance adding some different Wohlfahrt (no3) in there is one example. But I need to explore some things more fully. I need to get into 3 octave scales and appregios. I need to understand shifting better, and get more serious about some exercises. I'm happy and it fits my needs currently, but I could be doing alot better; and, more apt to utilize at least 3rd and some 5th.

I have to understand shifting above 3rd--there's a video there. I'll followup and continue this later, but it's getting late.

Day 47

Had a excellent night. Everything accomplished. Finished playing through Boccherini fairly nicely--but ways to go making it mine. Also went over and grabbed the theme I'm unfamiliar with in Bach Minuet in S3 successfully--it's very pretty. I'm looking forward to that too.

Friday, January 05, 2007

Day 46

Pretty good night--had company. Still got through everything adequately. Lots of Wohlfahrt.

Thursday, January 04, 2007

Day 45

Getting more serious about Boccherini. Everything accomplished. Lots of Wohlfahrt, review Suzuki II. Low energy, but worked my way through.

Day 44

Pretty good night--got back into swing. Everything accomplished.

Day 43 event/light practice

Did Uncle Buck's funeral toady, and practiced Suzuki tonight, but skipped elements.

Monday, January 01, 2007

Day 42

Practice: funeral. Tomorrow: funeral.

Day 41

Practiced for Buck's funeral with Jen. We arranged a medley of hymns that are very simple and beautiful. The chemistry we had for years on piano transferred even more beautifully to violin--I was overwhelmed, as was she.

Day 40 A Day off!

First day really off in 40 days---house full of company.
